RAFTER – Swimming Level 5

Campers are NOT allowed to be in an advanced area until they have passed the entire course and received their achievement card for that level.

Stroke Refinement

Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes.

  • Shallow-angle dive from the side
  • Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke
  • Tuck and pike surface dives
  • Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming
  • Tread water
  • Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly
  • Standard scull on back
  • How to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR
  • Recreational water illnesses
  • Reach or throw, don’t go
  • Look before you leap
  • Think so you don’t sink
  • Think twice before going near cold water or ice
  • Wave, tide or ride, follow the guide

RAFTER'S CHALLENGE

To complete this event, the camper will:

  • Swim for 10 minutes in 6-foot-deep water demonstrating the following strokes: 50 yards freestyle, 50 yards breast stroke, 50 yards back crawl, 50 yards elementary backstroke, 50 yards sidestroke and 25 yards butterfly. If all strokes are completed with time remaining, the swimmer may choose the stroke until the 10 minute point.
  • Without resting, swim into the rafter area and tread water in a confident manner for 5 minutes.
  • Get up onto the raft without assistance and dive headfirst into the water.
  • In 7-foot-deep water perform a head first surface dive, swim down to the bottom and retrieve sand or seaweed.
