Employment at Varsity Day Camp












2019 season – June 8th to August 9th

Dear Prospective staff,

Thank you for your interest in a camp staff position at Varsity Day Camp. Our 69th camp season is Monday through Friday for 8 weeks - June 11th to August 3rd. The work day begins with an all staff meeting at 8:20am and the camp day ends at 4:20pm.

Our camp schedule enables you to pursue taking a summer class or getting another job over the
summer if you wish.

We have 3 levels of staff positions:
15 & 16 year olds – Kitchen Assistant / Counselor in Training (CIT)
17 & 18 year olds – Junior Counselor
19 and older – Adult Counselor

Attached please find the following required materials which must be completed and received before being considered for a camp staff position:

  1. Staff Application Form – Please complete and return the staff application immediately to:

  2. Registry Clearance Form BCHS –Camps_001. All applicants must submit this. Please carefully read the attached staff clearance letter. Individuals requesting BCHS –Camps_001 a central registry clearance on themselves who are Michigan residents should complete the BCHS – Camps_001 form. Instructions for non – Michigan residents is located in the Staff clearance letter.
    You must either mail or take the completed BCHS –Camps_001 request form to the DHS office in your county of residence. To locate this office go to: http://www.michigan.gov/dhs/0,1607,7-124-5461---,00.html
    A copy of your picture identification (i.e. driver’s license, passport photo, school ID or state ID) must be mailed with the BCHS –Camps_001 form.
  3. Please request that the central registry form be sent to:

  4. References – You must get three (3) references completed and have them sent to me.
    Please request that these references be completed and sent to my address in Chicago.

All 3 (application, Central registry and references) must be completed and received before we can contact you for a phone interview.

Interview & Hiring Timeline:

First Round Interviews: Phone interviews will begin in March. Once I have received your completed application, I will contact you to arrange a phone interview.

We will schedule on-site second round interviews the weekends of May 19/20 and 26/27. Final staff offers of employment will be sent out the week after on-site interviews are completed.

Please note: The majority of camp activities are on open water i.e. canoeing, row boating, sailing, kayaking and paddle boating as well as fishing, catching turtles and swimming

  • To be considered for a Junior or Adult counselor position, you must have the following certifications:

    Lifeguard /Waterfront Lifeguard. If you are not a strong swimmer, you are required to have a minimum certification as a Shallow Water Lifeguard.

    First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer- Lifeguard (these are included in the Lifeguard class).

    Kitchen Assistants and CIT’s only need Adult/Child CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
    Do Not Delay - Start looking for and enrolling in a class now.

  • Completing and submitting all of the staff application paperwork and taking the Lifeguard class does not guarantee you a position as a camp counselor.

You must let me know immediately if you decide to withdraw your name as a prospective staff
applicant for the upcoming summer season.
